They believe that's unhealthy. Mark Strobel, a maker of so-called toxin-free mattresses for 33 years, is one of the doubters -- though his is a minority voice from the ranks of smaller mattress manufacturers. He lobbied against the new law, saying chemicals, such as boric acid, used in the process of treating mattresses can be absorbed into the body and are dangerous. Strobel, who owns Indiana-based Strobel Technologies, said he plans to continue offering his product with a doctor or chiropractor's prescription, an exception allowed under the new rule.
